University of Macedonia’s Eco-Management Office:
a decade’s success story

The Eco-Management Office of the University of Macedonia (EMAS-EDIN) aims at the constant improvement of the University’s Eco-Management System, which was first certified according to the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, EMAS (Regulation (EC) No 761/2001 (EMAS II)) in 2005 and since then renews successfully its registration annually. The main two goals of the Office are the reduction of the University’s environmental impact and the constant improvement of the University community’s environmental awareness. It is worth noticing that the UoM is the first public organization in Greece certified by EMAS.
In pursuing the first goal, we started in 2004 by reviewing the University's environmental impact, identifying all necessary actions to minimize it and finally implementing a set of actions in a pilot phase. In the same time a core group of students and personnel were trained in order to actively participate in the implementation of these actions. We established processes and procedures and gradually, through our annual evaluations, we improved the system, enlarged the group of participants, incorporated more actions and improved the targets of every existing action. Our efforts led to the improved of many crucial environmental indicators in the same time that we recorded substantial reductions in the university’s expenses. These improvements are reported in the certified annual EMAS Reports during the last decade. The main actions organized by The Eco-Management Office are:
- The initiation of a recycling program: we recycle paper, plastic, electrical devices, batteries, lamps, CDs/DVDs, inks, toners, wood pallets and organic waste (compost).
- ‘Greening’ the University’s public spaces: We have rehabilitated three terraces and a balcony in order to increase green spaces in the campus and we have grown a vegetable garden and a fruit plantation in the campus’ yard.
- Awareness raising campaigns on: energy and water use saving, paper poster reduction, food environmental evaluation, practical ecological everyday tips, photo exhibitions, information points, trash art, environmental movie shows, etc.
- Organization of environmental seminars, on issues such as Climate Change, Ecology and Science, Social Economy, Ecological Footprint, Veganism and Animal Rights, Voluntarism, First Aid, etc.
With respect to our second goal, increasing environmental awareness, we moved in two directions: incorporating the environmental aspect into the academic curriculum and establishing the Students’ Environmental Team.  Over the last decade University of Macedonia has introduced a number of courses with environmental content and continuous to strive in incorporating the environmental aspect in as many subjects as possible. Currently, UoM offers many options for under and post graduate students who want to attend a ‘green’ course. More than 300 students per year attend courses such as: ‘Environmental Economics and Natural Resources’, ‘Environmental Management and Entrepreneurship’, ‘Introduction to Environmental Economics’, etc, in various under graduate and post graduate departments.
The volunteer Students’ Environmental Team of UoM, founded in 2005, is coordinated by the Eco-Management Office and is open to all students. It is a group of people actively working towards sustainability, contributing to moving towards a society that respects both human and natural capital. Its environmental activities include: visits in places of environmental interest, such as Recycling Centers and environmental exhibitions, tree planting in the rural areas near Thessaloniki, cleaning events in various areas of natural beauty, greening of public and social spaces, educational excursions in mountainous areas of north Greece, participation in many ecological festivals, events and competitions, cooperation with environmental NGOs, voluntary organizations and public organizations, publishing our actions in the media, etc.
Apart from the two main goals detailed above, our actions aim at changing ourselves, our everyday behavior as well as the space we use. We further hope that our effort sets an example for other educational institutions and public authorities in Greece to follow and we are ready to provide assistance in building capacity.
